Obligatory Blog
My very occasionally updated thoughts that need to be expressed, and don't belong elsewhere.

Yeehaw! What a time. My eyelids can barely keep themselves up as I type this, so will keep it brief, but just wanted to write and say a huge WISH YOU WERE HERE! I adore travelling and luckily, it turns out, I love doing so by boat. Especially when said boat contains umpteen all-you-can-eat buffets, hot tubs and stops at delicious islands. Oh man. Even when I’ve hit the challenging parts (missing my family terribly, slight bouts of nausea, technical hitches with gigs), I’ve st

The Good, The Bad and the Fundraising
The gorgeous Ruth Sullivan and I improvising a song onstage at Friday’s fundraising gig. It’s a tough gig this fundraising thing. I am stressed. But trying to breathe. And taking massive comfort in the support of those around me who are jumping on board the mission to help make this happen. Like in life in general I guess, we have to remember in times of overwhelm that WE ARE NOT ALONE. Take for instance this weekend just gone. Saturday morning, the morning after the comedy f

Tour Diary: Goondiwindi Dreamin!
In the Warwick pub. Bless. What a week. I just got back from a super quick tour out west with the Young Guns of Comedy to Goondwindi, doing a gig for a conference of agronomists! I nearly died when I spotted my father-in-law in town (a wonderful, gentle soul who has never uttered a swear word from his lips apparently and who thus far, has never seen me onstage) and spent the next hour trying to talk myself out of a heart attack. He works in the agricultural field so it was no

Marriage Lessons from Australia’s Most Elderly Deaf Man
This is Percy. At 97, he is – I am told – the most elderly deaf person in Australia. (I suppose I should qualify that by saying that I mean he has grown up deaf and using sign language, rather than losing their hearing in old age.) What a guy. The other night, I had the great honour of performing some comedy at the ASLIA Queensland awards night, a celebratory occasion for interpreters and the deaf community. It was such a great vibe, lots of laughter, wine flowing, a funky ph

Betty and the Betties: a Photo Gallery
We had our very first gig on the weekend and oh my word. So. Much. Fun. We sang, we strutted, we posed for umpteen photos, jumped in army jeeps where we burst into even more song, we toasted ourselves with a celebratory cheap red wine in plastic glasses backstage afterwards…short of having garters hurled at our faces from the audience, it was pretty damn epic. On a selfish note, I LOVED actually having some wondrous girlies to share the oohing and the aahing of post-gig excit

Betty and the Betties at Teneriffe Festival Tomorrow!
Saving the world, one Song at a time! So do you remember a little while ago I introduced an all-new exciting project called Betty and the Betties? (Because that’s exactly what I’m needing, more commitments in this lifetime. I simply cannot help myself, when I get inspired by something new and shiny I am as helpless as a One Direction fan in the arms of a…member of One Direction. Note to self: research those kids’ names so you can write better OD jokes.) Anyhoo, two exciting a

Woodford Folk Festival 2011: A Personal Photo Gallery Day 2-3
Mister 7 learning to juggle. Mister 2 bringing it shaman hip-hop style. Damn hippies! Two of my favourite Woodford icons, Glover and Sorenson, doing the daily Joke'n'Choke at the Pineapple Lounge. Oh, to do a 2-person improvised comedy show with your bestest ever friend. Sigh. At Mister 7's request, they added a "man running away from dragon's fire." Musical GENIUS Matt Hadgraft joined me for a night of musical improv shenanigans. Steddy Eddie. I MAY be doing some keys with h

Melbourne Fringe: Touring with a Toddler Installment 10: Home Again, Home Again!
Notice the typo? Hehe. I kinda love it. And it’s done. WOW! What a rollercoaster. Thank you so much for reading along and sharing the wild ride. This mad adventure started strong, wound its way through a “keeping the faith” crisis of small crowds (a very common issue among the fringe fest overall this year so I’m told) and finally, finished strong. The final show was beautiful indeed. As it was being taped, I went for it 110% emotionally (those of you who’ve seen the show wil

Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival: day 1
I am here! Yes! In Adelaide! This is nothing short of a miracle as this time yesterday, it looked likely that flights would be canceled thanks to a certain volcano that just couldn’t contain itself for a few more centuries. Bloody volcanoes. Can’t live with em, can’t live without em..actually hang on a second, actually I totally could. Yeah, on second thought: Volcanoes, you can go suck it. When I rocked up at the airport in the wee willy winky hours of this morning, I was gr

Videos from our Sydney shoot are UP, yo!!
So you guys remember how for a very short period of time back there I lived the jet-setting dream (i.e. flew somewhere) with my littlest, to shoot some vids for a company which I couldn’t yet reveal the deets of, right? Right? RIGHT??! Come on, I know you’re just sitting there twiddling your thumbs and chewing off your elbows, counting down the seconds for the very next revelation of the incidental details of my life. Right? RIGHT? Fine, it is at this point that I yell at you

Toddlers on Set (or, “Here’s To You, Mrs Olsen”)
TODDLERS ON SET. Oh how I love it. It sounds just like a fabulously trashy reality talent show, resplendant with on-set tantrums, tiny bodies dealing with the limelight and countless others running themselves ragged trying to meet every reasonable and unreasonable demand of the talent. You know, so TOTALLY different from every other reality talent show out there. Ehem. Wow, what a week it has been. On set, yo. Notables: a) I absolutely LOVE working on camera – and as it turns

Web comedy shoot, Gumball Theatre and other madness this month
My heavens life is nutty. This month alone: 1. I have scored a most fabulous gig (fab in that it is completely and utterly up my alley in a very un-sordid way) shooting some comedic style online videos with my little toddler the Cass-meister! We’re off to the big smoke in a fortnight to join forces in what will hopefully be some funny onscreen collaborating. Dig! 2. I am madly preparing for the first show of the year of my favourite creation of late (namely cos it didn’t hurt

Creativity Carnival, The Courier Mail and other tid-bits
A bit more of my Halloween costume. I think I was a pirate Mummy. Huzzah! My innards are back in their proper place and thus able to just get that little bit fluttery excited to celebrate my inclusion in Musehunting’s Creativity Carnival. Go check it out, it’s suitably spiffy. I’ve been asked to MC tonight at Albion Comedy Club – apparently it’s sold out so I’m really only mentioning it on here to share, rather than induce ticket-selling riots. But there you go. In other news

For the sheer joy of (audience) participation!
I love audience participation. Partly because it lets me do what I really love doing most onstage – improvising – and partly because it means that at least one part of the show will be completely unique, never to be seen again by another audience in that same way. (Which really, again, comes back to what I love about improvising full-stop). I’ve learned the hard way to only ever take willing volunteers. People who are roped into it by somebody else, or are pressured by me, ei
