First Imprint

Writer's picture: Jenny WynterJenny Wynter

I was eleven years old when I was first published, and the only reason I found out was because I received a frisbee in the mail.

My letter to the editor of the Sunday Mail's "Fun Club" - of which I was a proud member, so much so I can remember my membership number to this day - had appeared in print the week before and I'd MISSED IT!

Luckily for me one of my grandmother's friends had spotted it, cut it out and saved it for us. It read:

"I disagree with (name of previous letter writer) who said that Beverly Hills 90210 is not relevant to Australia. It has dealt with issues including shoplifting, date rape, AIDS and teenage drinking. You cannot say those things do not apply here. It is the best show on TV."

As a bonus, the featured photo in that week's letters to the editor was a pic of the 90210 cast. #winning

I still count it as one of the proudest moments in my career.

And no, I don't have the frisbee as I was never much one for that pastime. Now if only it had been a handball...

I acknowledge the Gubbi Gubbi, Wakka Wakka and Butchulla peoples, the First Nation Traditional Owners of Country, and custodians of the land and waters on which I live and work, and all the peoples who have welcomed me on Country. I pay respects to all Elders past and present and acknowledge the young leaders who are working beside Elders in our cultural industries in the continuation of cultural, spiritual and educational practices. I recognise all First Nation peoples as the original storytellers of these lands and acknowledge the important role they continue to play in our community.
